"A large and appreciative audience gathered at the Broadway M. E. Church last evening to hear a lecture on 'Away Down South in Dixie,' by Selah W. Brown, D.D. Dr. Brown has a very genial manner and pleasing delivery and he held the attention of the audience from first to last. The lecture was at once instructive and entertaining; it was not a mere compendium of facts and figures relating to the South, but was on the John L. Stoddard type of lec¬ture ; the audience, forgetful for the time of the sharp winds and muddy streets outside, wandered in fancy through the romantic palmetto groves, the fields of cotton and rice in the Sunny South.
"The lecture throughout was a very pleasing medley of humor and pathos and was heartily enjoyed by all present."—Toledo Times, March 4, 1903.
Chautauquas

Over one thousand persons greeted him with enthu¬siastic applause. It was the acme of welcomes. And it was all the more deserved as it was the fifteenth time he has lectured in Santa Barbara. Mr. Brown's theme was 'The Great South,' and certainly it was the grandest lecture we have ever had in the city."— Daily Independent.
