Lectures
"Alaska, The Great Country'' "Utah, The Land of the Saints" "The Widened Vision" "The Program of Jesus Christ"
Introduction
FREDERICK VINING FISHER, preacher, lecturer, author and traveler is fitted in a peculiar way to interpret the West to the East, for he is a New Englander by ancestry, a New Yorker by birth, a Yale man by education. He has been pastor of large churches in the middle West. He has been a traveler and resident of the far West. He has tramped the Rockies, explored the Southwest, sailed Alaskan waters and lived in that Northland; camped over the Sierras and is now pastor of the large First Methodist Episcopal Church of Ogden, Utah, and incidentally, he is also President of the Associated Boys Clubs of Utah, Manager of the Utah Chautauqua and leader in the new kk(iet Together" movement for a Greater Utah.
"Alaska, The Great Country"
When Mr. Fisher came back from Alaska and at the request of friends began to protray the great Northland, so vivid were his descriptions, so new and fresh and full of the granduer, the romance, the sublimity, the very life-giving ozone of the Land of Ten Thousand Islands, insurmountable Alps, vast valleys and eternal silences, that the demand to hear it was such that he had to go on the platform with it.
It is very difficult to give in a word the charm of this lecture. Perhaps it is because it opens up a much larger Alaska than most men know, an Alaska rich with folk stories and strange traditions, the Alaska of the dreams of a Peter the Great, of the White Bear and the Five Flags, or perhaps the Alaska of glittering gold and flashing skies, of midnight sun and incarnate sunshine, of great sea harvest, wild forest jungles, of stately icebergs and Arctic flower gardens that make it a delight.
But the Alaska that looms large in the lecture is the Alaska of To-morrow, of untold wealth, of tremendous possibilities, the last great goal of Anglo-Saxon peoples, the greatest empire under the Stars and Stripes.
"Utah, The Land of The Saints"
The Utah lecture is of a new kind.
The Utah of the Cliff Dwellers, of strange garbed Spanish Fathers, of Hudson Bay Trappers will live again in this lecture. Then the lecturer will tell afresh in a way the East has never heard, that rarest, strangest and most fascinating romance of all America, the tale of the Mormon Pioneers and the days of '47.
Utah of To-morrow, where the tide of moving life will soon turn; Greater Utah which will surely come to its own; these will be above all the theme of this lecture.
But the Utah of To-day is the one above all in this lecture. It will not be the Utah of magazine articles, or of the passing tourists, but it will be the real Utah told by a man who lives amid its busy life, knows its peoples, and feels the intensity of its life. It will not be the one you expect
to hear of, nor will it seem real at first. But it will grow on you as you hear of the Saints in a new way. To deal fairly and face squarely the problems of the Utah that is, is the supreme object of this preacher from Utah. Every man who favors play fair with Utah ought to hear his story.
Sermon Lectures
Mr. Fisher gives two sermon-lectures, "The Widened Vision" and 'The Program of Jesus Christ." A noted authoress wrote after hearing this lecture, way up on the Alaskan Coast, "It grows and grows upon me, the widened vision, I shall live in a far wider world since I heard that."
The Program of Jesus Christ, the lecturer considers his best, the message of a man with red blood to live men, a man who believes the biggest thing before our age is the tremendous program of Jesus Christ, which is far more social than theological, the program of the kingship of the soul, the aristocracy of manhood, the annihilation of wrong and the coronation of service, a program too big for the world to even yet fully grasp.
Testimonials
C. A. Smurthwaite, Grain and Milling Man, Ogden, Utah.—I was capti¬vated with Dr. Fisher's "Alaska." I went to the hall with the idea that I should listen to ordinary things about Alaska. I had read about Alaska in newspapers and magazines and I thought I knew about as much as the ordinary reader. But I found that I had known nothing about it. Dr. Fisher made me feel that he was there seeing the country, and what a wonderful country, too, as well as beautiful. I had repeated the for¬bidding, but I heard the attractive and really regretted that I was not again a young man so that I could seek place and fortune there. I am sure Dr. Fisher's lecture will open up a new vista to the people who are so fortunate as to hear him, of a new Continent virgin, inviting and wait¬ing, for the conquest of the indomi-nable spirit of the coming Americans. Alaska will surety become the richly dowered daughter of the United States, and the nation is more likely to be indebted to Dr. Fisher's lec¬ture than to the activities of the Guggenheims.
//. W. Driver, Pastor Corinne Method¬ist Episcopal Church, Utah.—Fred¬erick Vining Fisher's lecture on "Alaska" is an able, eloquent pre¬sentation of the beauties, resources and needs of our most northerly possession. All who heard him were delighted and despite the fact that three other able men presented great themes, this was voted the best of all.
We do hope that Mr. Fisher will return to our city at an early date with such other treasures as he may have and we assure him he will be greeted by an enthusiastic audi¬ence.
Frank G. Brainerd, Pastor of First Congregational Church, Ogden, Utah. -The Rev. F. V. Fisher lectured on "Alaska" before our men's club and their guests. He completely cap¬tured our men. He gave them a new insight into the financial and civic possibilities of Alaska. I take very great pleasure in recommending both man and lectur? to other audiences.
