THE PETRIE NOVELTY QUINTET
THE PETRIE NOVELTY QUINTET
An All-Star Instrumental Organization
THE Petrie Novelty Quintet, headed by Herbert Petrie, well-known trumpet soloist, is all that the name implies and then some. They have a splendid reputation as star instrumentalists both in this country and Canada. They have made several trans-continental tours.
The Petries use thirteen different instruments in their program. That is real versatility. Their program consists of the most familiar of the classics, the most tuneful of the popular selections, and several unusual comic and novelty numbers. Some of their most successful numbers are stirring marches, gems from operas, old time songs, popular favorites of the day.
Their ensemble work is magnificent and their solo work outstanding. The com¬pany contributes frequent vocal refrains, and they sing well several deftly harmonized comedy songs. One member of the company is a fine concert baritone. Among their comedy numbers is a trombone duet, in which each operates his partner's slide. One of their popular stunts is the blending of four popular tunes into one. Another stunt is one where each member of the company handles and plays two instruments simulta¬neously.
Herbert Petrie, manager and director of the quintet, was a solo cornetist in the famous Naval Battalion Band, which was directed by John Philip Sousa during the World War. He was also solo cornetist with Dunbar's White Hussars and Al Sweet's Singing Band. He began the study of music at an early age. He was a student at the American Conservatory of Music and also a private pupil of Edward Llewellyn, first trumpeter of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. For four years he had charge of the band at North Central College, Naperville, Ill., directing the band and teaching various band instruments. For a number of years he has had his own company, which is generally considered one of the best of its kind in America.

The big reason for the success of his company is that each member is not only a star on his instrument, but a real musician as well. As a matter of fact, each member plays several instruments. B. Ritsenthaler, for instance, plays the saxophone, clarinet, bassoon, trombone and violin. He has been a member of the Petrie Quintet for seven years. Before joining the quintet, he taught reed instruments at North Central College for two years, was saxophone soloist with Al Sweet's Singing Band and Johnson's Chicago Cadets.
B. Morrissey has been a member of the Petrie Quintet for more than two years. He plays the trombone and piano. Before becoming a member of the Petrie Quintet he was a member of the Chicago Business Men's Symphony Orchestra. Another star member of the company is J. Greenup, who plays the trumpet and the mellaphone. He is also the baritone soloist of the company. He was one of the feature artists of the Heidelburg Student Chorus, Gilbert's Band and the Philharmonic Ensemble. The fifth member of the company is the pianist and accompanist.

With their shining trumpets, trombones, French horns and various other instruments they made most delightful music, always in the best of taste. Mechanicsburg, Pa.
The Petrie Quintet was all that it had been advertised to be. No more versatile group ever appeared here. Their comedy chatter was clean and funny. And their music, whether it was classical, old favorites, or modern, was of a high class and presented with superior showmanship.
Jacksonville, Fla.
The Petrie Quintet presented an excellent program. They can do everything in instrumental work.
