Pictured here are the frigates USS Knoxville and USS Chattanooga, sister ships of the USS Davenport, named in honor of the city of Davenport, now being constructed and which will be launched soon, probably in November. Mrs Ed Frick, wife of Davenport's mayor, (pictured in inset) will serve as the sponsor and christen the ship when it slides down the ways at the Leathem D. Smith Shipbuilding Co., shipyards at the Great Lakes port of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., where the ship is being built. The USS Davenport will be 303 feet long and will be of the largest type of escort vessel being built by the navy for convoying merchant shipping.
