that the Highlanaers circulate a letter to as many of the oluer members
as possible requesting them to report their activities since leaving tne
Highlanders and where they are now. Our present 6overninb committee carriea

for the Grenfeil Mission. In the two years while tnere she woncea in the
operating room, however, liKe most small places she also helpea can meat

She changeu from nursing to homemaxing. hoaman (her husbana) is a
resident in surgery at Mt. Holly. They have a blue-eyea blonae lassie,
Mary Kay who does a two-year-old’s version of the Highiana Fiin6 in preparation
of becoming a Hi6hianaer at SUI in 1965 or thereabouts. Mary Keeps
in touch with the Highlanaers' activities through her sister Helen (who
right now is one of our better pipers.)
Phyllis Nissen

You will remember Phyllis as a dancer in 1941-4-2 ana a tenor urummer
in 1943. Phyllis writes that they nave been in Mason City for a year ana
a half since Miles finished law scnool. They have two little boys, Steven,
3, ana ijarry 3 months. -- "So things are generalxy poppin0 at our house
ana Stevie shows definite musical talent." Phynis also writes about her
sister Eleanor (.drs. Robert beil, 2041 Superior, vmitinb, Ina.,) where
Bob is a Standard Oil engineer. Eleanor has a ferana job as social welfare
worker in whiting, also about another sister Joan (Mrs. Robert Krieaeman).
They are in Madison Vvisconsin ana expect to &o to ban Antonio as soon as
Bob has joined the air force.
Leon Karel

Leon is at btate Teachers College in Kirxsvixle. Leon as you remember
was one of the charter members of the Highlanders in x937-1940 or thereabouts.
Leon spent several "happy(?) years" in the 8>th division and the
13th airborne. Upon returning from Europe in 1945 he came bacx to bUI
(with a wife and one child) to finish worK on the Ph.D. in music. While
at Iowa uity his seconu chiia was born and to date "Laviu and baura are
the sole hopes for future bag pipers in the family." *fter graduating
in February 1946 he directed orchestra and tai^ht various things at
Lindenwood College in bt. Charles, Mo. Also conuucteu an interesting
series of television programs illustrating Various phases of college life
over the TV outlet at bt. Louis. In the summer of 1948 "I befean teaching,
here at Kincsvine ana hold the exalted ranK of associate Professor of
Music. I handle mostly upper class ana braouate courses in theory, nistory
of music etc. We have a house, car, good friends, neighbors ana in snort
are very happy with our life here. I haven't naa any »«ora from others of
the old Order of Highlanders (pre-female tnat is) ana will be looking

separatee in 1946. After one semester’of braauate work he began as a reporter
on the Bui’linj-ton nawiceye-Ga^ette ana his present job followea which is Public
Relations Representative in Chicago of the Burlington Railroaa.

She states that she is becoming an absolute miser in preparation for next

Bettye writes that after graauation fri>m SUI in 1947 she 'went to
Washington on a Rockefeller grant with the National Institute of Public
Affairs. In June 1948 she went abroad to study at Oxford University in
England and travelled on the continent, returning, to Washington in January
1949 as secretary to the South Dakota congressman. In July 1949 she
resigned to be secretary to John Foster Dulles of N ew York. Bettye is
now located in the office of the assistant secretary of state Geo V. Allin
in the state aepartment. bettye asks for information about Shirley
Ewing, Gwenne Buster and Ellen Sangster ana other majorettes with the
1943-45 Highlanders. (Of the three I know a little about Gwenne who is
now married to Dr. James Slater. I believe they are xivin6 in California
ana have a little Highianqierette.)

After leaving the’ Highlanders he joined up with the Army at.Brigham
Young University ana then "at the convenience of the government" the 70th
Infantry, following this an endless 'ugh' training came ana a trip to
France and Germany." A stint at Bierritz American-University after the,
war ana then his return to SUI in the fall of 1946. He received a BA in .
1948 ana is now working on a PhD. in Psychology at the University.

announcers are sufficiently impressea with how widespread Iowa alums are and
how interested ana impressed other people from other parts of the country

Nile's letter was a little jumpy in places because, as he explained, he
was writing it in a C-47 while traveling over the Ozarks. Space won't permit
all the interesting features of Nile's letter however we must say that he
is a research psychologist with the Directorate of Pilot training research.

the General Electric Co. working on jet engines, She asks for the

Bobby felt liKe a real Scotch lassie again once last year when a local
organization asked her to do some Scotch dances. She practiced and borrowed
a kilt from a local Scotsman and went through with it. They finished their
new home recently and have moved in amid "the mess of getting settled." They
are now looking forward to Christmas with their 16 months old son Brian Lee.

" After graduation (1944), I had a series of jobs which eventually
led to this one. I'm Assistant to the Director of the Kansas City Apparel
Assoc., a pubxicity and promotion office for Kansas City-made garments.
We also publish a market magazine "Fashion TJPIX", and in my spare time I
am also fashion director of the magazine. This' involves selecting
merchandise to feature editorially, booking models (ana interviewing an
endless string of hopefuls), supervising photography and writing fashion
copy. It's a continual snarl, but fashion is a fascinatin' business.
Joseph A. O'Leary

This erstwhile drummer after graduating with a BS in 1948 joined the
faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department at State College of
Washington. He is setting up an aeronautical laboratory ana hopes to
offer aeronautical courses ana to ao experimental wonc in the wina tunnel
laboratory next semester. He attenus the Univ. of Coloraao aurint the
summer and hopes to attain an MS in the summer of 1953.

After graduation in engineering in 1948 he has been with the Thompsons
Products Inc. in Cleveland as an industrial engineer in their dynamometer
laboratory where they do extensive research in automotive engineering.
He purchased a 41/2 room bungalow on the edge of Cleveland proper where he
is spending his spare time putting in a driveway extension, garage floor etc.

was born October 29 of this year. The other two boys, Michael ana John ar
41/2 anu 2 respectively.
Buster Hart

Buster is reporting for the inseparable Buddy and Buster Hart twins.
Since graauation Buddy ana Buster returned from tht army ana now are
attenuing Harvard law, school. If the presiaent ana Fellows of Harvard
become very charitable these two fellows will receive their uegrees tnis
coming June. Buster is still on the loose however Buddy is now married ana
has a new little uaughter who "is growin6 up to learn to twirl, to go
to Iowa and leaa the Scottish Highlanders in 1967. Buster adds "SUI's
all-girl Scottish Highlanders band has become so well known that I am
afraiu to tell anyboay I usea to belong to the organization ante-bellum
lest they wondered how I qualified.
Wm. L. Meardon

Bill reports that after receiving a commission through the ROTC ana
while waiting the call to active uuty in 1941 he took the examination for
the Naval Air Corps and passed with flying colors. After completing
training he was attached to the Fighter Squaaron and sent to tne South
Pacific on the USS Langley. After 15 months he returnea to the U.S. ana
then was sent out again on a 3 months cruise. Vvhen the war enaeu he was
flying over Formosa. Returning to Iowa City he enterea law school ana
braauated in 1948 passea the bar ana is now actively engagca in law
practice at the above address.
Just a "Hello" to all former Highianaers, to our present veteran
Highlanders ana to all the new recruit Highlanders who have cone ana are
still aoing such a grand job. Please accept from Mrs. Jenna, young Bill
ana myself, our heartiest ana most sincere gooa wishes for a very Merry

Fran is still the boss at our Bill is now 12 years ola ana Johnnie
is 8. Heather Ann is 3 ana already practicing the Highland Fling. All
the present Highlanders are working like maa on our projecteu tour of
Europe. If our present plans go tiirough we expect to spena about 70 aays
on this trip touring American ana British occupiea zones of Germany and
Austria and the British Isles.
