HIGHLANDER
76-77
Dear Highlander Alums,
It seems like we just ended
the 1976-7 school year and the
1977-78 year is already upon us.
I would like to take this time to
tell you a little bit about last
year and some of our plans for
the coming year.
This past year was very exciting
for me as a new director
and for the group with all of the
activities and special events
both old and new th a t we
participated in.
The football season was very
successful, the shows were entertaining
and were very well
received. We also took an away
trip to Madison, Wisconsin and
everyone seemed to have a 1
very good time, including Mr.
& Mrs. Frank Piersol who went
along as our guests.
We then spent the rest of the
year preparing for the spring
concert, seminar, and Tartan
Ball held in conjunction with
the concert. The seminar and
Tartan Ball was a new event
for us, the University and the
surrounding area. We were
able to bring to Iowa City a
piper and a drummer from
Vancouver, British Columbia
and a dancer from Kansas City,
Missouri as well as a tenor
drummer, entertainer from
Chicago-all of whom are champions
in their respective areas.
They stayed for three days; the
first two days were spent giving
intensive instruction to our
group and others who were interested
in learning and on
Saturday they were featured
guests on the spring concert.
The events were topped off
with a Tartan Ball held Saturday
night at the Ironmen Inn.
The Ball was complete with
dinner, haggis, toasts, dancing,
playing, story telling and a
“small” measure of drinking.
We had over 225 people for the
Ball. All in all the three days
were a complete success and
thanks to the many donations
from you and friends we were
able to provide everything to
the Highlanders at no charge.
We were pleased enough with
the results to continue it next
year and hopefully make it an
annual event. The dates for
next year’s seminar, concert,
& Tartan Ball are April 20, 21,
& 22.
This next year promises to
be even busier and better than
la s t . We have sev en home
games and our away trip tent
a t iv e ly p la n n e d fo r th e
Mic.higan-Iowa game in Ann
Arbor, Michigan on October 29,
1977. We also plan to make as
many competitions as possible,
the first one this coming year
to be September 3 in Kansas
City.
The administrative and instructor
personnel will be the
same so we should be old hands
at making things work and
with the ad d it ion of J ean
Slavata Costa as secretary last
year the office is running very
sm o o th ly . So u n l e s s th e
University of Iowa folds we
will be around being as active
as possible.
Thank you again for your
support both financially and
with your presence and letters.
It is because of you that we can
c o n t in u e s c h o la r sh ip and
travel funds and initiate new
programs like the seminar.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Pierce
Director-1976-77
The 1976-77 season was one of
great activity for the Scottish
Highlanders. The group maintained
its traditional high level
of performance during the foot-b
a l l s e a s o n u n d e r th e
leadership of its new director,
Mickey Pier ce and his fine
staff.
The inauguration of the April
weekend of clinics and instruc-t
io n c u l im in a t in g in th e
H ig h la n d e r 's c o n c e r t and
Tartan Ball was an outstanding
success. It is our hope to build
upon this beginning and make
this annual event one of the
highlights of the entire year.
We are so fortunate to have
b e e n a b le to s e c u r e th e
services of Jean Costa to follow
in Nadine Thornton's footsteps
as secretary to the Highland
ers. Her exp e r ien c e as a
former member of the group
p lu s h e r c o n t a g io u s e n th
u s ia sm for the program
make her a most valuable addition
to the staff.
The staff next year is headed
by Director Mickey Pierce assisted
by Craig Hazelbaker,
p ip e in s tr u c to r and Todd
Snyder, drum instructor.
My congratulations for the
good work in 1977 and the best
of luck for 1978!
Sincerely,
Frank Piersol
Director, University Bands
Dear Highlander Friends,
Now that I have spent one
year as Highlander secretary I
can say that the job is the most
rewarding, busiest, most hectic
(sometimes), and like no
other job I've ever had. I am
secretary, chaperone, confid
a n t , b u s in e s s m a n a g e r ,
s eam s tr e s s , nurse and you
name it—if I can, I do. For
every headache there has been
a reward. I will say the job
keeps me young and I do love
it. It has brought back many
happy memories with a group
th a t th e r e is no l ik e s of
anywhere. To be an alum of
this group let alone a secretary
make me very proud.
I would like to take this opportunity
to tell all you alums
out there, far and near, that
you are SUPER! and we do appreciate
and thank you for your
support. If you are in Iowa City
please stop by our office in the
Activities Center of the Iowa
Memorial Union any afternoon
Monday thru Friday between
12:30 to 4:30 P.M. and visit.
One of the things I like best
about my job is visiting with
people. For those of you that
w a n t to c a t c h up oji my
personal life see my note in the
1949-52 column.
My best to all,
Jean Slavata Costa

“It was a thrill to be back with
the Band-following a second re-tirement-
in time to go on the
1976 European Trip from May
16 to June 23! The personnel
was a bit different than past
trips, in that we had Lads as
w e l l a s L a s s ie s , an d we
t r a v e l l e d w i th o n ly on e
busload. But it proved to be a
very closely knit group, and I
loved every minute of it. Then,
I felt so good to be able to turn
over the office to Jean Costa, a
d e a r fr ie n d and Alum of
Highlanders, in the late summer
of 1976. Of course, I've
been able to spend a lot of time
with my California Family,
and escaped the severe cold
Iowa winter. I’m told, getting
back to Iowa in April-just in
time for the exciting Highland
Arts Seminar and Tartan Ball.
As always, there is much activity
here in the beloved campus
city. Many times, though.
I've wished there were “two of
m e" so that I could be in
California and Iowa City at the
same time! But I shall never
forget YOU ALL. I'm sure you
know every single one will be
forever very close and dear to
my h e a r t . Bon A c c o r d ! !

JEAN SLAVATA (1949-52 pipes

My husband, Mick, is temporarily
on sick leave following
heart surgery from his job at
the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City
and I, of course, am secretary
in the Highlander Office. I so
often think how strange life is
that I should be back with a
group that has provided me
with such wonderful memories
in the past. Although Mick and
I do not have any children of
our own we helped raise my
sister’s (Edith’s) two children.
Edith’s husband, Arnie, died in
1964 and Edith died in 1969. Her
daughter, Susie, and son, Jim,
c am e to l i v e w i th us in

to the University of Iowa, was
a dancer in the Highlanders
and went on the Foreign Tour
in 1972. She graduated from the

Falls, Iowa, played football for
UNI, and graduated in May,
1977. At present he is working
in Cedar Falls. Outside of my
work in the Highlander Office I
keep busy with sewing, bowling,
biking, and, of course,
housework.
HELLO to all the people who
wrote notes to me on their letters
it was such fun to hear
from you. As Marcia Healy
Cook so aptly put it: “I ’m sure
