1 9 7 8HIGHLANDER1978
Dear Highlander Alums,
Since my appointment as full-time
Director of the Highlanders in August,
1978,1 have found it to be quite rewarding.
The enthusiasm and hard work
of the Highlander members has made
the first six months of my job very
pleasurable indeed, and I hope to be
with the Highlanders for many years
to come.
In addition to performances at all
the University home football games,
we were enthusiastically received by
over 100,000 people for our half-time
performance at the Ohio State-Iowa
game in Columbus, Ohio on October
21, 1978. My wife, Karen, and several
of the Highlanders got to meet Bob
Hope a f te r half-time c e remo n ie s
there, and presented him with an old
photograph of himself signing our
Highlander bass drum. I was pleased
to meet a number of Highlander
a lums a t our annual Homecoming
“Coffee” , but I hope we can expand
this in future years and see a good
many more of you.
In late November, we finished a
lengthy recording session and are now
offering our new stereo record album
“ PIPES OF OLD GOLD” for sale. I
am very proud of all the Highlanders
who devoted a great deal of time and
h a rd work in preparation for this
recording. I am hoping that all you
Highlander alums will purchase a
copy—I know it will provide you with
many hours of listening pleasure as
well as bring back some fond, old
memories.
On December 2nd the Highlanders
performed “ In Concert” at Harmon
Hall for the Performing Arts at Drake
University in Des Moines. The conc
e r t was sponsored by the Scottish
Heritage Society of Iowa. In addition
to the traditional piping, drumming,
a n d H i g h l a n d D a n c i n g , o u r
folksingers performed several excellent
numbers, both in English and in
Gaelic. A unique feature of this conce
rt was the "Mull of Kintyre” selection
which incorporated pipes, drums,
folksingers as well as electric guitar
and bass. This tune was recently
made famous by Paul McCartney and
Wings, and will be featured once
again during our spring concert.
Our annual Highland Arts Seminar,
Tartan Ball, and Spring Concert will
be held this year on May 4, 5, & 6 and
will feature some of this country’s
finest instructors in piping, drumming,
Highland Dancing, and Country
Dancing. Further details will be sent
to you when it becomes available.
One of the instructors for this y e a r ’s
Seminar will be Miss Mary Beth Miller,
who is now enrolled here at the
University and on our staff as Dance
Instructor. This is her first year with
the Highlanders also, and she has
proved to be an invaluable aid to
myself and the organization.
We would like to hear from you!
Please fill out the enclosed questionnaire
and return it so we can use the
information in the next newsletter.
Also, we greatly appreciate any cont
r ib u t io n s you c an m ak e to our
S ch o la rsh ip , Seminar, or T rav e l
Funds.
Sincerely,
Bruce D. Liberati
Director
Scottish Highlanders
The 1978-79 season for tne Scottish
Highlanders promises to be one filled
with great activity. The shows at the
football games were well-planned and
executed, and the performance at the
Ohio State game was received with
g re a t enthusiasm by the crowd of
over 80,000 people.
Under the tutelage of newly appointed
d i re c to r Bruce L ib e ra ti , th e
second semester will be spent in improvement
of proficiency in pipes,
drums and dance in preparation for
their many appearances, annual conc
e r t . Highlander seminars. Tartan
Ball, etc. The enrollment of national
champion dancer, Mary Beth Miller,
in the University this year has made a
most valuable addition to the instructional
staff of the Highlanders.
The production of a recording of
music of the Highlanders is eagerly
awaited by their many alumnae and
friends.
Congratulations for the good work
this year!
Sincerely,
Frank Piersol
Director, University Bands
Dear Alums,
I want to thank you for the tremendous
support you have given us over
the past year. It is because you, the
alumni, still care that we continue to
exist.
It has been two years since I assumed
the Directorship of the group
and I wonder now where the time has
gone. I feel priviledged to have been
able to work with a group of such fine
people and high calibre musicians but
it is time for me to move on as I have
completed the work on my present
degree and have accepted a teaching
job at Stephen F. Austin State University
in Nacogodces, Texas.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Pierce
Director—1976-78
Dear Alumns,
I am sorry it took so long to get this
le tte r to you but unfortunately the
d a y s a r e n ’t long enough to g e t
everything accomplished and consequently
some things have to be put
aside temporarily. Since most of the
comments were written some time
ago I have dated each person’s information
in order to give some perspective
to the notes. I would also like to
say that even if you think you have
missed our deadline for response do
send us your news anyway—even if
we have “gone to press” we can use it
the next time around.
I would like to write each and
everyone of you personally to thank
you for your donations to our causes
but since it is not possible I would like
to take this opportunity to tell you we
m o s t s in c e re ly a p p re c ia te y o u r
generosity.
Now that I have become somewhat
“ seasoned” at my job as secretary
th e joys have in cre ased and the
traumas decreased. My experience as
a former member has been a great
help in working with the band.
For many of us our association with
Highlanders is probably still one of
the most cherished memories of our
lives as is evidenced by the fact that
whenever a Highlander returns to
Iowa City for some reason, they seem
to end up in our office to visit and
recall.
KEEP VISITING AND WRITING!!
Health & Happiness to all,
Jean Slavata Costa

Our daughter, Leslie and I proof
read the Highlander letter this afternoon
so it’s time for me to write my
note.
I ’m always amazed at the life styles
and accomplishments of the former
Highlanders. So many interesting
people!!
Our life stays very busy. Chas is
publisher of an 8,000 daily newspaper
plus printing other newspapers and
c i r c u la r work plus being on innumerable
boards and committees.
He loves it!
1 stay busy with AAUW, church work,
planning commission, grown children
and being ready to go places when
Chas goes.
Our biggest project for last summer
was our family reunion at a hunting
reserv e in the mountains near us.
S ev en ty - fo u r au n ts , uncles, and
cousins (four generations) came for
the gathering of Clan McDonald. We
wore them out with white water rafting.
golf, tennis, dirt caves, talking,
eating and a tour of Fallingwater, one
of F ran k Lloyd Wright’s m a s te rpieces.
We even had our own kirk with
our Scottish minister and a bagpiper.
Since Christmas I ’ve taken two very
interesting and timely trips. The first
was a two week trip to Israel to visit
our daughter Leslie. We toured the ent
i r e country (ju s t missing a few
b om b s and s k i rm i s h e s ) . I t ’s a
fascinating place and you return with
a much better understanding of the
deep problems of the Middle East.
The progress the Israeli’s have made
turning desert and rocky barren land
into fertile farmland would warm the
heart of any Iowa farm girl or boy.
( Leslie had been studying in Arad and
working in Jerusalem the past y e a r.)
The other trip was to Panama and a
briefing on the Panama Canal, recept
io n with P r e s id e n t Rojo and a
management meeting on Contadora
Island. Can’t beat newspaper work for
excitement.
Our children are grown and doing
their own thing but the house never
seems to empty out completely. They
a re Karen-29, Laura-27, Leslie-25,

We enjoyed seeing the Highlanders at
the Ohio State game—see you there
again in ’79.—4/10/79.

renews an old friendship. My sons are
now grown and no longer teenagers.
Anthony (26)—to attend Physician’s

Mike (24) still racing with bicycle and
soon to begin graduate work; Jim
(2 0 )—working in supermarket and
taking turn as night manager, with
continuing interest in coins, metal
detecting, baseball, and fishing. All
still have "girls” but no "girl.” I ’m
enjoying the freedom from being
"constant mother” and taking trips
and enjoying all of it. During last
year, have been to Colorado twice
(rafting and skiing). New England,
and Memphis. Tennessee plus the
frequent shorter trips to visit old
friends. This truly is “Prime Time”
and I enjoy i t !” Em came to the Tartan

we hope she enjoyed it.—3/10/78

‘‘I so enjoy and appreciate the
n ew s letter and the update on old
friends. The Highland Arts Seminar
and Tartan Ball is a tremendous idea.
There are numerous Scottish Highlander
groups in this area and fine dance
groups. The Annual Devon Highland
Games a ttract fine groups and are
only a few minutes from home—a sentimental
‘fling’ for me each year. My
family is scattered throughout the
world—Kathleen (26) and husband in
Taiwan with Navy Medical Research
Unit; Ben (23) is in Peace Corps
(Fisheries) in Central African Empire;
Marg (24) is doing graduate
work in bio-medical engineering;
Steve (18) will graduate from H.S.
this year leaving one at home with me
as of Sept.! Unreal! And exciting. I
continue to enjoy counseling. The
needs and problems grow larger as
our student numbers grow smaller.

“As you note above, we’ve moved.
It is 12 miles from here, in a ‘has-been
boonies’, where the acreage is now
going for $70,000 per. We’ve got 4 (not
p u rch ased at th at p r ice) and are
gaining 4 acres, a 13 room house and
loosing some smog, noise and a few
s to p s ig n s. As yo u ’ve re a d , the

scooped mud out of the house a few
times (with no windows or stucco, it
does tend to come in). We finally got it
bulldozed around so the mud can run
elsewhere. So hopefully, April 1st will
bring The Great Junk Pilgrimage.
(All that mid-west junk has a nice
California price tag. I ’ll send the kids
through college with my old fruit jars

Club 4-H leader for the local club, as
the two oldest are real active. They
were both county winners on their

Exhibition trophy at the Co. Fair for
th e best birds - her Bronze-Wing
Doves and at another show won 5

Pheasants. Jill (7‘/2) won trophies on
her Golden Pheasants. Penny (10*6)
lost out to her sisters. They’re raising,
showing and winning on Guinea Pigs
now. Jill’s in first grade, so can now
drive her teacher nuts instead of me.
Roger (4) goes to Nursery School
which gives 2 interrupted AM’s a
week. What did I do? Sneaked a 10 day
trip to Iowa, as my folks were moving
to a retirement hotel in No. California.
Returned with a suitcase full of
plants and a garage full of furniture.
Finally finished piecing 3 quilt tops
and put them together with Liz’s 4-H
sheep wool. Stripped a 50 year old
cupboard with the same number of
coats of paint, and some other furniture.
Realtors aren’t too nuts about
you doing that in your driveway when
they’re showing a house, so it went in
bits and pieces. I had a kitchen companion
of a Pidgeon Hawk, who was
tame and fell asleep on my shoulder
watching TV. Right now I have been
‘gifted’ with 2 orphaned Hummingb

babies -- I hardly knew when labor
was starting, on my own kids??) A big
garden plot is ready to plant, Thankfully,
our dog likes to chase rabbits.
Guess this year will be busy, too. Who
says country living is slow-paced??
Sure do enjoy the newsletter - it’s the
only way I hear about any of my era
group. Too bad I can’t find somebody
up in the Canyon to teach the kids bagpipes

“ One of the most meaningful events
in my life was my baptism into the
Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter

and happy since then. Come September
I will be winging my way to the
Em e ra ld Isles. Through the credit
union I will be traveling to Ireland for
8 days and 7 nights. I ’m very excited
as I have wanted to do more traveling
since the ’76 Highlander European

plans in the near future but I
have much to occupy my time. The
Young Adults from the Church are
always planning dances and other activities.
I went snow skiing for the

with the sport. Once I managed to
make it down the hill without falling,
it was even more fun!” Since July ’77
