Description	Amjad Al-Jawhary, North American Representative of the Federation of Workers Councils and Unions in Iraq (FWCUI), was born in Baghdad in 1966. He earned a bachelor's degree in biology at Mosul University in 1989. Because of his political views and organizing among sewing workers, he was blacklisted by the regime and was unable to find employment in any state enterprise. With his family, he fled to Turkey in 1995 and was active among Iraqi refugees there. Since 1996 he has lived in Toronto, Canada, where he has spoken widely on Iraqi issues and has been active in the anti-sanctions and anti-war movements. He is a member of the Iraq Freedom Congress. Since the start of the occupation of Iraq, he has been speaking to audiences in countries including Japan, France, Finland, and the U.S, to convey the message of Iraq's working people. He has spoken frequently about the impact of war, sanctions, and occupation in Iraq and on the history of the Iraqi labor movement and workers' responses to current conditions in Iraq. Currently as the North American representative of the Federation of Workers Councils and Unions in Iraq (FWCUI), Al-Jawhary works on linking the labor movement in North America to the labor movement in Iraq, and trying to build a strong foundation of solidarity between these two movements. The FWCUI supports organizing workers in their workplaces and in the public sphere to demand workers' rights and labor law reforms. The organization formed in 2003 in Baghdad in a public conference attended by many delegates from every city in Iraq. Today the federation has members in almost every sector and industry from Basra in the south to Mosul in the north. Its major goals are building a strong working class that leads to a modern society and direct intervention in making policies and decisions at the governmental level. Key issues of focus for the FWCUI are working hours, wages, women's rights, social benefits, and unemployment insurance.
