Description	Charles R. Hale is associate professor of Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. His areas of research and interest include: Race/ethnicity; identity politics; consciousness and resistance; activist anthropology; Latin America and Caribbean. Charlie received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1981 and earned his Ph.D. in 1990 from Stanford University. We are indebted to Dr. Claire Fox, English, and Leslie Aktan, International Programs, for organizing A Symposium on Latin American History in Honor of Charles A. Hale, which is the event that has brought our speaker and the Hale family back to Iowa City.
