A thousand WACs stood an unbroken 40-minute parade rest on the cold concrete recreation hall floor Tuesday in a delayed flag presentation ceremony at Fort Des Moines WAC training center.
The occasion was the presentation of a WAC-designed flag by the Polk county American Legion posts to the WAC post—the post's first flag.
Lieut. Gen. Mathew A. Tinley, commander of the Iowa state guard, made the presentation in the absence of Gov. Bourke B. Hickenlooper who was forced to cancel his appearance at the last minute due to a conference in the Iowa coal controversy.
