Capt. M. H. McAfee, former president of Wellesley college, Wellesley, Mass., became the first member of the Women's Reserve when sne was commissioned as a lieutenant-commander Aug. 3, 19 42, and became the first woman naval officer in history. This followed the passing of the legislation by Congress when one member objected to its passage saying "this is no time to put butterflies in the navy."
