flfafiaiTwar Prisoners Will I Stay at Eidora Until Spring
Grundy Register: "The Italian war prisoners wWl|ere sent here from Camp Clarkf Mo., over a month ago to help talfe^earl} of the hemp icrop in Grundy atfd a^join/ng counties and who have been: housed at the former CCC barracks at Eidora, may be kept here until next spring or later to help out the probable labor shortage on the farms.
"The Iowa Falls- and the Hampton hemp industry have finished with the war prisoners. Those two plants have
I enough local help to meet all require-ments. The plants at Grundy Center
¦ and Traer, where there is not such a large supply of available local labor, are still using the prisoners. Three'
crews have been employed here toL help in the stacking of the hemp bothr at the grounds and on a number of i farms. One or two of these groups, will i he* needed to help stack on the Grun-j dy hemp grounds.---- j
/'While arrangements have not beenj definitely made to keep the war pris-J oners at the Eidora camp, it is quite J probable that some or all of them will] Stay there to help out the labor short-1 4ge in the spring. Some of them may be needed in the hemp mills after] processing starts. The barracks at El-f dora have been leased for the duration J of the war by the hemp industry. It is i very expensive to move prisoner headquarters and if there is a possibility that the men will be needed here again in the spring they will be housed here during the winter to save the cost of moving them down to Missouri and back again a few months later."
