The Italians, formerly (but not now) prisoners of war, were engaged in work for the Army. The source of irritation in this particular incident appears to be merely that the Italians tended to monopolize the facilities of the post exchange.
It isn't too difficult to understand the attitude of the American soldiers in this case. Only bad administration would permit a situation to develop in which the soldiers couldn't get served.
But this is only one of many incidents 'that indicate faulty handling of the prisoner of war problem. There was the recent ease of a German prisoner who was badly beaten by his fellows because he wanted to write to an uncle in the United States who was "not a good Nazi." They got away with it. an
