The University of Iowa
Iowa Gallery - Digitized Art Collections from The University of Iowa

About the Collection

The University of Iowa has inspired creativity and innovation in the arts for generations. Iowa was one of the first to accept creative work for graduate theses, and to confer the Master of Fine Arts degree. Iowa also pioneered the professional artist-as-teacher concept; Grant Wood, for example, was a member of the faculty in the 1930s. Iowa’s highly regarded programs include its fine arts graduate program, ranked among the top 10 public universities by U.S. News & World Report, and its printmaking specialty, ranked No. 2 in the nation. The University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) houses an impressive collection, including Jackson Pollock’s Mural and an extensive collection of African art.

Much of the history of art at the University and its surrounding communities has been documented and digitized by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences School of Art and Art History and by the UIMA. The Iowa Gallery website, maintained by the Digital Library Services department of The University of Iowa Libraries, provides expanded and integrated access to these materials, in order to support research and scholarship by students, faculty and staff. Included are more than 15,000 digitized artworks.
