Former Mason Cityan gets UNICEF board position
Miss Esther J. Walls, director of book and library programs for Franklin Book Programs Inc., New York, was elected to the board of directors and voted a member of the Corporation of the United States Committee for UNICEF at their May meeting at the United Nations.
As a board member, Miss Walls will join others such as Mrs. Lester Pearson, Mrs. Cabell Calloway and Norman Cousins in advising the Committee on its activities — the Halloween trick or treat collection, the greeting card sales, etc.
Pleasure in the opportunity to serve UNICEF is expressed by Miss Walls, who anticipates that this activity will deepen significantly her own interests in international reconciliation.
A former resident of Mason City, Miss Walls is the daughter of Mrs. E. S. Walls, 626 S. Adams. Her work with Franklin Books is directed toward newly literate persons and has taken her to Africa several times.
Miss Walls was on the staff of the Mason City Public Library before going to New York where she worked for the New York Public Library. She was director of the North Harlem Countee Cullen branch there before going with Franklin Books in 1965.
