"Campus appointments," October 17, 1974
Mr. John Smith, Director of Libraries, announces the inauguration of noontime concerts in the Galleria (main entry hall). In an effort to give greater visibility to the Library and to enrich the cultural experiences of the academic community, a series of musical events are scheduled to commence on Monday, October 21, at 12:15 p.m. David Lawton, Associate Professor of the Music Department, will conduct members of the University Orchestra in a performance of selections from a forthcoming concert. The program will include Gabrieli's "Conzona Noni Toni" and Gounod's "Petite Symphonie pour les Vents." Additionally, Ray Urwin will conduct brass fanfares.
All are invited to come; bring your own lunch, and enjoy these informal musical events. Campus and local performers will be featured in the future. The fall series follows:
Wednesday, November 6 — Brass music — Directed by Ray Urwin.
Wednesday, November 20 — The Stony Brook Chamber Singers singing Brahms, Schutz, and Scheidt.
Wednesday, December 4 — The Stony Brook Woodwind Quintet.
Wednesday, December 18 — The Stony Brook Trumpet Guild.
John Patches, Concert Manager, Music Department and Dorman Smith, Music Librarian are coordinating the series.
Campus Appointments
Miss Esther J. Walls has been appointed Associate Director of Libraries. Her previous experiences include a variety of publishing and library postitions, most recently, Head of the Teachers Central Laboratory/Education Library at Hunter College of the City of New York. Prior to that, she held positions as Director of the U.S. Secretariat for International Book Year, 1972, and as Program Officer for Franklin Book Programs, Inc. She began her career in The New York Publis Library where she held various administrative and specialty service positions. Miss Walls culminated her NYPL experience as Director of the North Manhattan Library Project.
Out-going Chairman of the ALA International Relations Committee, Miss Walls was recently appointed to a two-year term as ALA representative on the United States Commission for UNESCO. She also serves as a member of the Board of Directors and Vice President for the U.S. Committee for UNICEF.
Professor Ruth Miller has been appointed Assistant Academic Vice President. Her essential responsibility will be in the area of academic program development. She will continue at this time in her role as Chairman of the Comparative Literature Program.
Professor Ruth Cowan will be serving part time as an advisor to the office of the Academic Vice President on special projects related to faculty and personnel policy considerations.
