OLD GOLD BRIEFS - Joins Law Faculty - J. S. Williams of Denver, Col., Columbia University graduate and specialist in administrative law, joins the faculty of the Iowa College of Law this fall. He replaces Clark Byse, on leave from the University, with the Securities Exchange Commission in Washington.
Williams will be faculty advisor for the Iowa Law Review, and will teach constitutional law, administrative law, and equity.
Negro Woman Receives Ph.D. At Summer Convocation - The first Negro woman to obtain a Ph.D. degree from an Iowa school and among the few to reach that scholarly peak in the entire nation, Lulu Merle Johnson was awarded the highest degree the University offers at the summer convocation, August 1.
She returns to Talladega, Ala., College this fall, where she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History. The second Negro woman to receive the M.A. degree at Iowa, she won that degree here in 1930. Miss Johnson is much interested in Negro education, insists that Negro teachers must be better trained.
Assumes An Added Duty - Robert E. Neff has been named administrator of the Psychopathic Hospital in addition to his duties as administrator of the General Hospital. Pending the appointment of a permanent medical director of that hospital and a head of the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Wilbur R. Miller will serve as Acting Medical Director and Head of the Department.
