K)/5^/«W Iowa City Press-CStizen *- . ^ HOMECOMING Author, scholar Prestage honored at UI By the Press-Citizen Jewel Limar Prestage, a teacher, au¬ thor and scholar, is this year's hon¬ ored alumna for the Uni¬ versity of Iowa's n * Homecoming Prestage 1990. Thirty-six years ago, Prestage became the first black woman to receive a doctorate in political science from an American uni¬ versity when she earned her degree from UI. Her initial academic ap¬ pointment was as a political science teacher at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View Texas in 1954-56. Then she moved to Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., where she served in several capacities, in¬ cluding dean of the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs. Prestage left Southern Uni¬ versity in 1989. She now is in¬ terim dean and honors professor of political science in the Ben¬ jamin Banneker Honors College at Prairie View University.
