Description: African American Studies programs proliferated on U.S. college campuses during the 1970s, and the University of Iowa was at the forefront of this newly-emerging discipline thanks largely to the efforts of Darwin Turner, Ph.D. (1931-1991). Audio recordings assembled by Dr. Turner reflect the breadth and depth of the Iowa program, a collection that encompasses what scholars consider the apex of twentieth-century political, literary, and academic thought in this field. The majority of the recordings in the Darwin Turner Audio Collection are lectures from the Institute for Afro-American Culture, given from 1969 to 1978 as part of the Iowa Consortium for Black Studies. They feature a diverse cast of leading scholars in the then new and emerging fields of Black Studies, Afro-American Studies, African American History, Caribbean Studies, etc.; including Julian Bond, Ralph Ellison, Vincent Harding, Arna Bontemps, Val Gray Ward, John Hope Franklin, and Rita Dove among many others. The institutes were held for the benefit of scholarly research projects and additional training for college instructors of Afro-American history and culture. Faculty and programs from several higher education institutions in Iowa participated in the institutes and the Iowa Consortium for Black Studies, including the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa, Des Moines Area Community College, Drake University, Grinnell College, Coe College, St. Ambrose University, and Simpson College.
In addition to the audio recordings, this collection also includes the Darwin T. Turner Papers which contains curriculum vitae, correspondence, texts, bibliographies, photographs of participants, papers from his service in national organizations, his presentations, and his collections of writings by African American authors. Darwin Turner served as the chair of the Afro-American Studies Department at the University of Iowa where he taught from 1971 until his death in 1991. Together, these collections document the development of the African American World Studies Program within the English Department at the University of Iowa.
