Project description by students: Muscatine is a town steeped in history, and a home to a great number of historic spaces. Boonie's On the Avenue, 214 Iowa Ave., is one of them. This building housed the Muscatine Journal from 1904 to 1919, where Mark Twain worked for a brief period of time. The current occupant of this space, Boonie's On the Avenue, opened about a year ago. They pride themselves on being a family-owned and -operated business, local to Muscatine. Despite having a bar, this place has a family feel, and parents are comfortable enough to bring their little kids for a meal. Boonie's draws people to walkable downtown Muscatine, enhancing the surrounding area. This restaurant effectively uses a historic space, while providing a welcoming environment for anyone who stops by in the present.
