Project description by students: Muscatine is a town with a unique history of industry. Being conveniently located on the Mississippi River allowed the town to have success first with the lumber industry and then at the turn of the 20th century with the pearl button industry that put Muscatine on the map. Today, industry in Muscatine continues to be wildly successful and is the home for many big corporations such as Kent Feeds, Musco Lighting, HNI, and Stanley Consultants. We sat down with Greg Jenkins, president of the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce, Rich Dwyer of Kent Feeds, Sal LoBianco, general manager of Muscatine Power and Water, and Mary Wildermuth and Terry Eagle of the Muscatine History & Industry Center to discuss the factors that made Muscatine the industry powerhouse it is today, the challenges that come along with this success, and what the future may hold.
