Project description by students: Many students don't know, but Iowa has been an extremely progressive school throughout the years. A few firsts Iowa has accomplished include being the first public school to have a traditionally black fraternity in 1914, the first black woman to receive a doctorate in political science from an American university in 1954, and also being the first tax-supported university to establish a school of religion in 1927. The Iowa first that we found most relevant in our society today was that Iowa was the first university to recognize a gay student organization in 1970. We focused on this first because this is still an ongoing issue not only at Iowa, but at other universities as well. We wanted to see how the invested and involved the University of Iowa was with educating all people who are on the campus about the LGBT community.
