Irish writer Eavan Boland, Ida Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa, presents the annual Paul Engle Memorial Reading. Boland, who attended an IWP residency in 1979, has published nine volumes of poetry, as well as two volumes of prose. Her awards include the Lannan Foundation Award in Poetry and an American Ireland Fund Literary Award. She is a member of the Irish Academy of Letters and the advisory board of the International Writers Center at Washington University. She is professor of English at Stanford University and director of the creative writing program. The Engle reading honors the memory of visionary Iowa poet Paul Engle, who led the Iowa Writers' Workshop to prominence and co-founded the IWP. In Iowa, Engle's birthday became officially Paul Engle Day in 2000. The Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professorships Program was established in 1978-79 based on a bequest from the late Ida Beam of Vinton, Iowa, who willed her family farm to the UI Foundation. The proceeds from the farm's sale enabled the UI to establish a fund that brings top scholars in a variety of fields to the university for lectures and discussions.
Live From Prairie Lights was a live public radio program broadcast from Prairie Lights, an independent bookstore in Iowa City, Iowa. The program showcased new and established writers from around the world.
