Kansas writer Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg reads from "The Sky Begins at Your Feet: A Memoir on Cancer, Community, and Coming Home to the Body." Mirriam-Goldberg braved breast cancer and the loss of a parent by connecting with an eclectic Midwest community, the land and sky, and a body undergoing renovation. Along the way, she swims with stingrays in the Gulf, searches for cream puffs for a Pennsylvania funeral, advocates protecting ecologically essential land in Kansas and helps students find their voices in Vermont. The poet laureate of Kansas, she is the author of three collections of poetry and the award-winning "Write Where You Are," and edited "The Power of Words: A Transformative Language Arts Reader." She founded Transformative Language Arts at Goddard College and facilitates writing workshops for people living with serious illness. With rhythm-and-blues singer-songwriter Kelley Hunt, she also performs and leads Brave Voice workshops and retreats. Mirriam-Goldberg helped found the Kansas Area Watershed Council, the Continental Bioregional Congress and the Transformative Language Arts Network.
Live From Prairie Lights was a live public radio program broadcast from Prairie Lights, an independent bookstore in Iowa City, Iowa. The program showcased new and established writers from around the world.
