An interview for the Africa Division of the Voice of America's "Conversations with African Writers" series, which included interviews with more than 80 African writers during the 1970s. Additional information about this series can be found in Lee Nichols' African Writers at the Microphone (Washington, D.C.: Three Continents Press, 1984). Maddy was a 1992 participant in the University of Iowa's International Writing Program. Sierra Leonean playwright and novelist Maddy discusses his "unorthodox conduct" and his works' revolutionary messages. He responds to questions about his intended audience, the function of the writer in society, and the importance of incorporating traditional material into African writing.
