A famous, grammatically-challenged writer, once opined, “Nothing happens nowhere.” An even more famous writer, unable to find her missing home, lamented, “There’s no there there.” In this Eleventh Hour, we consider the why, the how, and especially the wherefore of the power and the place of place in narrative writing, both in fiction and creative nonfiction. Place means. Place evokes memory. Place is the air your characters breathe. We look at examples and discuss how to bring a fictional or remembered place into vibrant life.
