New Mexico woman gets No. 1 place
Register Des Moines, Iowa New Meocimo Woman Gets No. 1 Place /"- The honor of being the first member of thef women's army to take up residence at the Fort Des Moines army post training center Saturday went to a Negro school teacher, Miss Bessie Mae Jarrett, 27, of Las Cruces, N. M. Miss Jarrett arrived in Des Moines by train and went immediately to her quarters in one of the big dormitories at the post. Teacher of History. She is a graduate of Prairie View State" college, Hempstead, Tex. She has a bachelor of arts degree and has been a teacher of history and education in secondary schools. Miss Jarrett is one of the 40 Negro women who will enter the women's army auxiliary corps officer training school. Of the 800 women to begin training Monday 440 will be officer candidates. The remainder will be trained as basics, or privates. Two Montana women and one from New Jersey also arrived during the day Saturday.-- The officer candidate from New Jersey is Miss Christie Margar-
