Woman dies, four injured in a collision
Morning Register Des Moines, Iowa Woman Dies, Four Injured In a Collision One woman was killed and four other persons were injured late Sunday night when an automobile in which they were going to Fort Des Moines collided with a atreet car at S. W. Ninth street and Army Post road. Two of the injured were WACs, a third a navy cadet. Mrs. Grace Olds, about 50, of 1320 Fifth ave., was killed when the car she was driving jammed into the bumper of another car, then into a telephone post, and finally struck the street car. Suffers Concussion. Mrs. Catherine Witt, about 45. of 1323 Fifth ave., suffered a brain concussion and possible shoulder injuries. Navy Cadet B. P. Arterbury, 21, of Houston, Tex., stationed at the naval air base, Ottumwa, la., said the two women had met him and the two WACs in a night club. He and Pvt, Valeria Way, 23, of Wichita, Kan., suffered only bruises and shock. Pvt. Pat G. Prymkalski, 21, of Sacramento, Cal., suffered leg cuts that required stitches. The three service persons were treated at the Fort Des Moines post hospital. Cadet Arterbury said Mrs. Olds and Mrs. Witt offered to take him and the WACs to the fort and return him to Des Moines. Make Investigation. Deputy Sheriffs John Calvert and Joe Robertson, who investigated the accident, said the car apparently was approaching Army Post road from the north when the driver saw a street car leaving the "Y" on which the Fort Des Moines cars turn to return to Des Moines. Calvert said Mrs. Olds' car swerved to the right. It took the bumper off of an automobile driven by C. Ralph Vestal, of 1212 Geil ave.
