Depicting the grime and living organisms that reside on the surfaces of our buildings, this is an image of an environmental film that was collected over a two month time-span on an uncoated silicon wafer from the roof of the Campus and Recreation Wellness Center (CRWC). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to capture the surface at a micron scale; in real life, the entire image lives in a space the size of a width of a human hair. The specific organism that is pictured is unknown, but is believed to be a type of fungus based off of its size and DNA staining.
