introductory the iowa federation home having been in operation now for just ten years the trustees have issued this little booklet for the informa tion of both prospective residents and the gen eral public largely through whose donations it was purchased has been beautified and is now being maintained purpose since the fall of 1908 there has been an increasing number of negro young women en rolled at the state university for several years these young women he ing few in number easily found homes with the various fatuity members where they served as domestics earning thei7 board and room and sometimes a little spending1 change but by the year 1915 the number had increased to about seven some of whom could not find suitable homes in which to live the negro population of iowa city being quite small so a delegation of these young women visited the state federation of colored women's clubs in session at cedar rapids end plead with these women to give them tome assistance in the procuring of a dormitory where they might have comfortable quarters at a nominal price as well as more time for study and some social environment similar to that in the regular university dormitories where on account of their race they felt that their presence would not be desired and where few of them would be abie to pay the scheduled fees university or iowa libraries iowa women's archives
