**26**' one or the other of the tv;o fraternities* Parties ?/ere held on an average of one B'^i^ri' two weeks* fhey were almost in¬ variably dances.and were generally open to most of the legro atudents* Occasionally a small card party or other social affair would be given by some of the colored matrons for a few of the students* Aside from the affairs mentioned^ there was little opportunity for the students to meet in a social way e^ccepting at the legro ForiiM| of which mention will be made later* fhe parties were usually given at one of the two fratern¬ ity houses* In addition to these rather regular affairs there were two occasions in the year which were conducted on a large scale One was in the fall at the time of Home Coming and the other was held in the spring and called fhe Spring Party* A^ lumni and invited guests usually came to these two functions in large nimberB which made it necessary to accomodate the group at sorae one of the local dance halls* fhere was usual¬ ly little if any trouble in securing a hall* In past years fraternities have united to arrange a Joint p^rty, but usual¬ ly each gives its own affair* fhe followins table indicates the number of parties attended by individual students during the school year* A colored matron from the city usually cha¬ perons the parties in accordance with college regulations^ University of Iowa Libraries
